the link below. now, don’t confuse quorn with corn. i am sure we will get to corn at some point, but today we are talking about the meat substitute brand quorn.

if you have never heard of this product, don’tfeel alone, i hadn’t either. so i had to do some intense research. quorn launched britain in 1985. it is now being sold in 16 countries. it’s been on the us market since 2002. at its core, quorn is made up of mycoprotein. this is a highly processed product, producedby means of a fermentation process, which starts off with a natural type of fungus, fusarium venenatum. by the way, my curiosity and love for latinled to find that veneatum means “poisonous.”

it is where we get the word “venom” from. the fungi placed in large fermentation vatsand fed glucose, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, as well as vitamins, minerals and other secretingredients. these ingredients allow the fungi to grow. in time, the fungi are mixed with eggs andseasonings, cooked and turned into chunks made to look like meat. here is what the product looks like comingout of the vat. quorn has been sued recently for pretendingmycoprotein is mushroom based. mushrooms are fungi as is mycoprotein.

but mycoprotein in reality is a type of mold. “mushrooms are as distantly related to quorn’sfungus as humans are to jellyfish,” told a cornell university mycologist to the fda. so, is quorn good for diabetes? i could only find 2 studies in my researchboth are over 20 years old. in 1995, a small study conducted by researchersfrom king’s college at the university of london indicated that mycoprotein had a positiveeffect on the blood sugar and insulin levels of its study participants – an effect thatcould benefit type 2 diabetics and people with insulin resistance.

another small study, this time by researchersfrom imperial college london, confirmed this potential benefit. however, more research is needed before anyfirm recommendations can be made quorn has been the subject of several lawsuitsincluding a wrongful death suit. some people have an allergic reaction to thefungi in corn, like some have to peanuts or soy. the problem is there is no test to confirmallergy. it’s eat it and find out. i will say that this is a personal opinion, but my answer is no.

quorn is not good for diabetes. while the nutritional values may suggest itis a good food for those with diabetes, there just isn’t enough evidence for me to sayit is safe. those of you who eat quorn, keep eating ifyou choose. but after my research, i cannot endorse thisproduct for any human. i hope this answered your question is quorngood or bad for diabetes.
